Jesus gave money a significant, personified name: Mammon. Mammon is an Aramaic word typically meaning 'money' or 'wealth.' However, in using this term, Jesus elevated it beyond a simple noun. He did not say, "You cannot serve God and Caesar" or "God and Baal," referencing a known pagan deity. Instead, He introduced a spiritual competitor. By personifying and deifying money, Jesus revealed it as a power—a spiritual force competing for our ultimate allegiance.

Understanding money as a belief system explains why economic success never produces spiritual righteousness. You can't fix a heart problem with better financial planning. Even perfect prosperity cannot generate faith in God—it might actually hinder it by making mammon's false promises seem credible. The issue isn't money itself—humanity tends to invest belief, trust, and hope in created things rather than the Creator.

We need a comprehensive framework that connects our financial lives to the deepest truths of the Christian faith. We need to understand money, not as an isolated topic, but as one thread in the magnificent tapestry of God's redemptive purposes for creation.
